Brass band music is an essential part of the New Orleans jazz scene. The music has developed from military marching band melodies and instrumentation to today´s jazzy combination also including religious and popular melodies.
Brass bands - and smaller street bands - are popular and widely hired for social occasions like parties, funerals, weddings, picnics, and major big fests like the Mardi Gras. Brass bands are flexible - because the whole band is a walking group - and visually very attractive with uniforms and different kind of instruments.
Reine Rimón´s New Orleans Brass Band (N.O.LA BRASS) has since 1989 performed in Finland at military musical events (Hamina Tattoo), at big band festivals (Imatra International Big Band Festival), jazz festivals (Pori International Jazz Festivals, sports events (Helsinki City Marathon), at corporate banquets (Finnlines/Nordic Ferry Center), and at several funerals of private persons.
